This interactive online map is a visualization of the career data of most of the accused with connections to Loyola University Chicago. By putting the stations of these men’s careers on a map, the physical dimension of the sexual abuse crisis becomes immediately clear. The viewer can see where careers overlapped, where people clustered, and how far the reach of the careers of some of the accused was. Each of the individual accused has their own symbol and color to easier follow their careers.
We decided to only mark locations of alleged abuse for the four primary accused, Thomas Gannon, Donald McGuire, John Powell, and Lawrence Reuter. These locations of alleged abuse are marked with a white lightning symbol on purple background.
Clicking on “View Larger Map” in the upper right-hand corner will open the full map in a new browser tab. This allows the viewer to scroll through the individual careers more easily, switch individual career paths on and off, and generally see the data visualization with more clarity.
